Slowly Back Away

from Slowly Back Away by Smokin' Rings

/

about

Inspired by a series of midnight train journeys made on a life changing trip to Paris, lead singer James Brennecke compares his own anxieties about being stuck in uncomfortable social situations, with unnerving interactions with drunk passengers on the french underground. The chorus is written as a sarcastic, yet motivating anthem with the words "everything will be okay", before descending into a heavy riff capturing the bands innate energy and heavier roots.

lyrics

There's a drunk man on the train and
I'm getting afraid that
You and me will be taken out
In a violent spree and
I'll say it again, see if this time it sinks in
That I'll take anything you give me
Long as you are honest with me

Keep thinking everything will be okay
Cross your fingers as you
Slowly Back Away
I'm not going through this again
I can't sleep soundly when
You come home

But I'll take this train again alone
And hope when I get home
You'll already have gone to sleep
So I don't have to talk
It's easier to say
When I know you're far away
When everyone is upstairs laughing
I don't have to breathe
I'm sticking to the sidelines
Just like I've done all my life
In the background of the pictures
Then jumping into the spotlight
Or the headlights
Of the taxi
Coming at me
On a dark street
Or the shadows in the alley
Or the knife of the drunk while I'm keeping you laughing at

Still thinking everything will be okay
Cross your fingers as you
Slowly Back Away
I'm not going through this again
I will sleep soundly when
I fade away

Still thinking everything will be okay
Cross your fingers as you
Slowly Back Away
